PANDORUS SPHINX MOTH, SICKLEPOD, LARGE MILKWEED BUGS, VOODOO LILIES, AND MORE


August introduced me to many interesting  and beautiful moths, insects, reptiles, and plants.  

I found this T-shaped moth on a window at the back of the lab.  It is about an inch from wingtip to wingtip.  Many of the "plume moths" roll their wings up tightly when at rest which results in this characteristic shape.  I'm pretty sure this is a Morning-glory Plume Moth.  




This is a view of the Plume Moth's underside.  I read that the pairs of spikes on its legs are of unequal length.






I bought this carnivorous sundew in the spring to plant along side four different varieties of pitcher plants and a small Venus flytrap in my very small bog garden.  I read that there is a plume moth whose caterpillar actually feeds on sundew, this plant that makes meals of most insects.  Nature has all sorts of secrets!






I found this tiny moth next to a brick mortar joint at the lab.  It took me a while to identify it, but with the help of a moth field guide and that powerful tool called Google, I believe I've got it. It believe it is a Double-banded Grass-Veneer Moth. Several references say that its larvae feed on "various grasses".







In August I came across two different species of Thread-Waisted Wasps.  

The first was this mated pair that flew in tandem from one large Rudbeckia bloom to the next.  This wasp does not have a common name.  Its scientific name is Eremnophila aureonotata.  The genus name translates to "lover of solitary places".  The species name refers to the white/gold markings on the side of the thorax and on the forehead.


They flew quite gracefully from flower to flower.  These wasps are members of a family known as digger wasps.  The female digs a burrow in the ground.  She captures a large caterpillar, places the paralyzed prey in the burrow, and lays her eggs on it.



Below you can see the twin vertical white markings on each wasp's head.




The other thread-waisted wasp I saw was this "sand loving" species named Ammophila procera.  These wasps hunt caterpillars, too, but usually dig their burrows in sandy soils. 



The front section of the abdomen of these wasps is orangish-red.  They have white stripe-shaped markings on their thorax which is a little difficult to see in these pictures.




Flying around the Rudbeckia the same day was this skipper butterfly.  It seemed to have a greenish color with a tinge of orange or yellow.  When I went searching for the species of skipper butterflies in North Carolina, I found that there are over 70!  It appears that one of the most common skippers in the Piedmont region of North Carolina is the Sachem Skipper Butterfly.

This is a side view of another individual that I believe is the same species.  The smudge marks on its wings are more noticeable.




This little guy had me scratching my head for a while.  I finally found a link that shows the development of the Fork-tailed Bush Katydid.  From the pictures at that link I am guessing this is probably a nymph (immature katydid) in its fourth, maybe fifth instar.  After hatching from its egg, the katydid molts (sheds its skin) seven times before it becomes an adult.  Each stage or period between moltings is called an instar.  The Fork-tailed Bush Katydid also has three color forms: green, pink, and dark.






One early morning in August I found our second Copperhead of the year lying on the sidewalk near our front door.  Using the dog pooper-scooper, I moved it into a five gallon bucket, covered it by placing a second five gallon bucket inside the first, and drove it to a secluded location about a half mile from the house.  The Northern Copperhead is a pinkish tan, with darker bands that are somewhat hourglass in shape draped across the snake's back.  It has a triangular head, but some non-venomous snakes also have heads that are a bit triangular.




This is my favorite creature of the late summer.  I found this moth one morning in mid-August at the back of the lab on a teak bench.  Its color and the scooped out feature of its hind wings was very eye-catching.  My moth field guide includes a picture of this moth on the book's cover so it didn't take long to identify it as a Pandorus Sphinx Moth.  Its caterpillar is fond of the leaves of grapes and Virginia Creeper.  I also read that the caterpillar had been observed eating Poison Ivy as well!  The adult moth drinks nectar with its proboscis from a number of flowering plants including petunias.


When I tried to move the Pandorus Sphinx Moth to a sheltered location, it flew a short distance and landed with its wings extended further.  The multi-green, black, and tan markings are very crisp and attractive.






This is my first voodoo lily, Amorphophallus myosuroides or Mousetail VooDoo Lily, that I bought two years ago.  The catalog says this "new" species was discovered growing on vertical, shaded rock ledges in the Khammouane Province of Laos in 2004. This summer the plant produced two blooms (shown below) that resemble the tail of a white mouse that pokes out above the foliage.


This is the second bloom of the season.






This voodoo lily, with rain drops on the tips of its leaves, is named Amorphophallus Symonianus.  The species is native to north central Thailand where it is often found growing in rock crevices.  We have not had a bloom this year.  Maybe next year.


When cold weather sets in, we bring the voodoo lilies inside. The leaves will die back and store energy in a corm which remains dormant until Spring when we will return the barren looking pot back outside and begin watering again.




My good friend from Montgomery County, NC brought in this multicolored jewel of a beetle.  It had passed on, but was still beautiful.  This insect is a dung beetle known as the Rainbow Scarab Beetle. The horn protruding from the beetle's head indicates that this is a male.  I found the following interesting story in my search for information:

"There have been incidents where dung beetles accidentally infested humans, such as occurred with a group of 186 boy scouts in Pennsylvania in 1957.  The beetles crawled into the ears of the boy scouts while they were sleeping.  Bleeding was induced by the hind tibial spines of the beetles, but no secondary infections were reported (Mattuck and Fehn 1958)."





This is a nest of Fall Webworm.  These guys show up in late summer and feed on as many as 100 different species of trees.  Since these caterpillars build their webs in late summer, the leaves that they eat would have been shed in the next month or so, and therefore does not usually injure the tree.


These are Fall Webworms on a Sweet Shrub (aka Sweet Betsy, SpiceBush, or Carolina Allspice) at home. They are very fuzzy and have hairs of different lengths.  Notice the two parallel rows of dark spots along the back.  The caterpillars vary in color from green (as above) to yellow (as below).



This is another Brown Marmorated Stink Bug that I found behind the lab.  Notice the light bands on the antennae. Since it does not have wings, I believe this is a nymph.




This is Duc L'Orange, an male Eastern Box Turtle we often see behind our house.  It was a very hot day and he had his legs stretched out to cool off in the shadier part of the yard. I'd say he was "cooling his heels".





Recently this cicada exoskeleton was left behind when its occupant emerged after spending two to five years in the ground feeding on tree rootlets.  Adult cicadas spend most of their two week life finding a mate and laying the next generation of eggs. 




I have not seen many June Bugs in the last ten years or so.  I found this old and worn individual behind the lab.  These insects bring back memories of visits to Pop's garden in the Sharon Church Community north of Kinston, NC where they were abundant on his row of Wiggins June Sweetening apple trees in the late summers.





I picked up this Carolina Mantis for a closer look.  I suspect is it not full grown.



This interesting plant showed up in our yard this summer.  At night and on cloudy days, the leaves would completely fold up.  This picture was taken in the middle of the night when I was out walking Sadie, our old Labrador Retriever mix, in an effort to prevent another "accident" in the house.


During the day the foliage flattens out into arrays of six leaves that are all in one plane (not an airplane, but a flat surface).



For many weeks we saw no evidence of flowers until very late August.  Here you can see the beginnings of a seed pod emerging directly from the center of the blossom.


And below are the long sickle shaped pods that give this plant its common name, Sicklepod.  This plant is in the Senna group of the Pea family.






Grammy found a large Black and Yellow Garden Spider with the remnants of a Tiger Swallowtail Butterfly in her web which was suspended between a bird feeder pole and an azalea.  Other names for this spider are Yellow Garden Spider and Writing Spider.  We used to hear that it was bad luck if the spider wrote your name in its web.  That part of the web is called a "stabilimentum" and there are a number of theories about its function, including as a visual warning to birds to avoid the web, as a camouflage for the spider, and as a landing area where insects might land much to their detriment.




I noticed this interesting spider web in some tall grasses this summer.  The web's stabilimentum reminded me of the smoke rings my grandfather would puff for his grandchildren and of his metal ashtray complete with two open-mouthed pelicans for parking his lit cigarette.
  

I visited this spider web several times and noted a small spider with green, white, black, and yellow markings on its abdomen.  I expected it to get larger each week, but it didn't seem to grow.



After searching the internet for weeks, I finally found a link to the Lined Orbweaver, Mangora gibberosa.  Bugguide.net has some nice pictures, too.







I found these bright orange and black insects feeding on the seedpods of Tropical Milkweed that I have planted in the front yard in hopes of providing a food supply for Monarch Butterfly caterpillars.  So far no Monarchs, but these Large Milkweed Bugs, as they are aptly named, are sucking on the juices of the milkweed seeds.  The adults are able to pierce the flesh of the seed pod's outer covering to get to the seeds inside.



The nymphs cannot reach the seeds until the seedpod has begun to mature and split open.  After hatching, Large Milkweed Bugs go through 5 molts before becoming adults. Like the Monarchs, they incorporate the toxic substances of the milkweed into their bodies which protects them from creatures who try to prey on them. It's not a good idea!


Tropical Milkweed (Silky Mix) is an annual milkweed in our area that I planted to attract Monarch Butterflies.  I have harvested some of the seed to start new plants next Spring. Already some of the seed are spreading their parasols and floating off across the yard on the breeze.

MID-JULY "MOTH HUNTING" WITH THE GRANDSONS (AND OTHER CREATURES)



With the grandsons visiting from Georgia, we decided to set up an inaugural event for our "moth pit", not to be confused with a mosh pit (no wild dancing allowed - see: (mosh pit)). Earlier I had ordered a mercury vapor lamp which I modified for the moth viewing area.  I suspended an inexpensive large white bed-sheet from a piece of 1/2" conduit and draped the sheet over a folding table.  I placed the mercury vapor lamp on a plastic crate which I set on the folding table. At the other end of the moth pit, I hung another bed-sheet and suspended a black light in front of it.  

One of our first customers was this Brown Marmorated Stink Bug (BMSB).  I've read that this species was accidentally brought here from China and can cause damage to fruit trees and crops such as corn, soybeans, and tomatoes.





Our first moth visitor was this black and white beauty, a Grape Leaffolder Moth.  Their caterpillars feed on grape leaves and make their cocoon by folding part of a grape leaf and "stitching" it together on the open sides to form an insulated pocket in which to transform into its adult moth form.  






Soon we had another moth visitor.  This lovely moth is a female Pink-striped Oakworm Moth.  My wife had seen a pair of these moths a couple weeks earlier.  Their fuzzy head is quite luxurious.





Next up was this Skiff Moth.  It is a chunky little moth with chocolate brown side "panels".  The "What's That Bug" website describes the caterpillar of this moth as a harmless species of the "slug caterpillar" family some of which have spines that can deliver a painful sting.








Soon this robust beetle with pincers flew in and landed on one of the sheets.  




One of the twins let the female Reddish-brown Stag Beetle take a ride on his finger.  These so-called "pinch bugs" are pretty harmless, but a bit scary looking.  One of the characteristics of this stag beetle is the yellow-orange color of the femur (thigh bone).  The larvae of this beetle, large "C-shaped" grubs, feed on rotting trees and logs.  The adult beetles feed on sap.  I read that captive adults can be fed maple syrup or sugar water.



About a month later this male showed up one evening.  The males use their sickle shaped "pincers" to wrestle with other males for the chance to mate with a female.



Below is a close-up of the female Stag Beetle's antennae.  I read that the stag beetle's antennae usually have ten segments.  Many species have the segments at the end of their antennae enlarged, and some species, like this one, have elbow shaped antennae.



This is a close-up of the male stag beetle's antennae and mandibles.  See if you can count the ten segments.  The one closest to the head is a long segment.





We found a few other moths that evening, but I have not been able to identify them to this point.  But the biggest hit of the evening was a Brown Garden Snail that the boys positioned to see if it could crawl up the vertical portion of a concrete step.  They were impressed that indeed it could!  I did not get a photo of it that night as I was busy tracking down moths and beetles, but I did get these pictures last fall of a Brown Garden Snail on the leaf of an October Glory Red Maple.  






The boys also spent quite a while following three large Leopard Slugs that glided around near the edge of the Moth Pit.  I did not get photos of them either, but here are a couple links to pictures and interesting facts about these handsome mollusks.

Sadly, the grandsons were gone too soon, back to their Georgia home.  So we've continued our hunts for more of nature's creatures from our respective environs.

Back at the lab I found this remarkable Clymene Moth wearing a dagger-shaped (or cross-shaped) marking on its back.  Its hind wings, which are covered here, are bright yellow. My sister found one of these moths just two weeks earlier at her home in Washington, PA.  This moth is in the Tiger Moth family and its caterpillar is quite spiky like its cousins the woolly-bears.  Here is a link about how to keep a woolly-bear to observe for a while. (link)






At home by the light at the side entry door, we found this beautifully iridescent moth with pale gold along the front edges of its wings.  Its antennae gracefully trailed back over its pearly wings.  I emailed a copy of this picture to "What's That Bug". They identified this winged beauty as a moth with the sscientific name, Stemorrhages costata  (link).  Later I found references to an almost identical moth know as Kimball's Palpita Moth (Palpita kimballi)  (link)  that is more common in our area.  I need someone to show me the difference!




Nearby we found this gorgeous Tulip-tree Beauty Moth.  It stayed in the same spot for two days before flying away. The caterpillar stage of this moth is one of our largest measuring worm or geometer ("earth measurer").  





On a Sunday morning late in July as I passed the pottery jug birdhouse of Carolina Wrens on the way to potty the dog, I noticed that the wrens seemed to be hanging out of the nest, sort of on "their front porch".  They'd be flying within an hour or two as we soon found out.


My wife called me to the living-room to see four little birds fluttering around on "our front porch".  We went out to investigate and as we tried to locate each of the four babies, I felt something alight on my left should.  My resourceful wife grabbed her i-phone and took this picture.  The little bird sat there for nearly a minute before fluttering off after his nest mates!  We're not sure if it was reminded of the nest it had just departed when it looked at my scruffy face.




Taking a leisurely walk behind the lab I found this Carolina Mantis on a Winterberry Holly bush.  It had some sort of winged insect in its grasp.





The mantis always seems to be looking my way no matter where I moved.  So I headed on to the next bush so that it could finish its meal in private.





On another Winterberry Holly, I found this odd looking creature.  It took me a while to Google up the identity of this caterpillar.  When I first saw it on the leaf, I was reminded of a partially washed off bird splash.  I also couldn't figure out the material that was suspended seemingly in mid-air between its front end and its back end.  I learned that this is the caterpillar of the Harris's Three Spot Moth.  The suspended material is actually the remains of the head that it shed when it last molted and it is attached to wiry hair-like structures on its body.  These caterpillars use these "old heads" in one of its defense strategies.  






I found this interesting moth on the back window of the lab. The unique silvery markings on its wing helped me confirm its identity as a Soybean Looper Moth. 






This Black and Yellow Mud Dauber gave me a chance to capture the iridescence of it wings.  This is the species of mud dauber that built its nest of twenty or so mud columns in one of the Bluebird nest boxes at the lab.  That nest is pictured in my July 2014 post.  I've added the following link that shows the number and variety of spiders that the mud dauber paralyzes and stores in each nest chamber to feed its developing offspring.

THE EARLY DAYS OF JULY 2014



7-7-2014

The lab grounds has a cluster of "ghost trees" along the edge of a pine and mixed hardwood patch of woodland. These dead trees have numerous woodpecker holes.  This is a Red-headed Woodpecker that stopped to perch before flying on to its nest in a taller dead pine tree nearby.


The adult Red-headed Woodpecker brings a food item to the nest which is at least forty, maybe fifty feet off the ground.

Also along the edge of this patch of woods, I found this Bull Thistle (also called Spear Thistle).  Although this plant is considered a serious weed by many, it also provides food for a number of native birds, particularly the beautiful American Goldfinch (see link).  Goldfinches also use the downy part of the seed as a nesting material.

My lab colleague, Ann, came looking for me today because she had seen a large moth resting on one of the large second floor lab windows.  Soon the moth fluttered to the patio below and landed on a bench.  We hurried down to take a few pictures of this Royal Walnut Moth (also called a Regal Moth).  Its larvae is the harmless but scary looking caterpillar known as the Hickory Horned Devil (see link).  I tried to move the moth from the patio area into nearby shrubs, but it took off and flew strongly away from the lab.  At about 150 feet from the lab and about 60 feet off the ground, it was suddenly met midair by a Northern Mockingbird.  I was momentarily saddened by this turn of events until I saw that the mockingbird careened off in one direction while the moth climbed further still in the opposite direction and landed in the top of a tall pine tree at the edge of the lab grounds. This moth was too big for the mockingbird to eat or to take to its nestlings which I found a few days later.



7-10-2014

As I walked the perimeter of the State Lab property checking the bluebird boxes, I noticed a pair of Northern Mockingbirds moving around in the top of a young bald cypress tree.  One bird had an insect in its beak. 


About 25 feet away in a small bush, I found this nest of four mockingbird nestlings just 18 inches off the ground.  I am guessing that they are about four or five days old.

As I left work in the early evening, I found a second mockingbird nest in a maple tree in the parking lot in the front of the lab.  The nest was about 7 feet off the ground and about two feet out from the trunk in the fork of a limb.  It was too high up for me to take pictures.  Both parents scolded me sharply, but did not fly at me as they often do when humans are near their nest.


7-11-2014

The next day I visited the nest in the bush again.  After taking this picture, I moved about a 100 feet away and watched for a while. One of the parent birds hunted insects on the open ground near the nest, raising and lowering its wings to show a sudden flash of white feathers. This behavior can cause hidden insects to move or fly so that the mockingbird can find them. 



7-17-2014

Today when I visited the mockingbird nest, I found just three well feathered nestlings.  Perhaps one of them has already fledged.


7-18-2014

When I first peeked in the mockingbird nest today, there were two nestlings.  By the time I took the second picture, only one bird remained, as the other little mockingbird slipped out the back side of the nest and flew.  The nest was empty by the next morning.


7-11-2014

Danny, another lab friend, came to get me today to report a stunned bird in the open patio area at the back of the building where it had struck a large window.  This beautiful bird is a female Blue Grosbeak (sometimes described as cinnamon in color).  You can see that it has a heavy beak which it uses to crack or crush large seeds.  Its beak is similar in size to the beak of the familiar Northern Cardinal (Cardinal info), to which it is related.  The male Blue Grosbeak that I saw earlier in the summer was vivid blue with chestnut brown colored wing bars. (Blue Grosbeak info)

The grandsons are coming!  So I began trying to set up a temporary moth observation area that I call the Moth Pit.  It is a space that is surrounded on three sides by a three foot retaining wall and the fourth side by a basement wall and doorway.  Above it are part of our bedroom and Peggy's study.  I tried it out on Sunday night before the kids arrived.  I did not get the white sheets put up, but I turned on my new mercury vapor lamp and a black light to attract the insects.  The few moths that showed up were perched on dark painted siding and the pictures did not turn out well.  The first customer was this inch long click beetle. When they find themselves on their back, they are known for their ability to click the two segments of their body in a way that launches them into the air and back onto their feet.  The larval stage of this and other click beetles is called a wireworm.

Another guest was this very small long-horned caddisfly.  I don't know much about caddisflies, but this one had enormously long antennae, more than twice the length of its body.



7-15-2014

The boys have arrived!  On their first full day, my wife and our daughter took the three grandsons out to Prairie Ridge EcoStation for a "Herp Hunters" walk.  My wife and the youngest grandson decided to attend a mud-pie making class, while the twins went on the walk with my daughter and me.  We saw a many interesting things, but no herps until Ms Mandy, our leader, turned up a couple Green Treefrogs that were hiding out in "frog pipes" that were placed in strategic locations around the pond. Notice the treefrog's sticky suction cup shaped toe pads and his yellow "racing stripe".  And his eyes are so beautiful.  Ms Mandy also had a few containers of tadpoles and froglets to share with the kids.

After the Herp Hunters walk we stopped by the butterfly garden to look around.  Right away the boys were looking for butterflies!

Soon they were treated to a beautiful Monarch feeding on a purple cone-flower!

An Eastern Tailed-Blue butterfly sips nectar from a Partridge Pea blossom at the State Lab.  Their caterpillars also feed on the leaves of this plant as well as clover and other plants in the pea family.
